2022 Olympic Winter Games

February 4th until February 20th, 2022

Beijing

Most people were not familiar with the host of the 2018 Winte Olympics, PyeongChang was more than once confused with the capital of the northern neighbour (Pyongyang). Beijing doesn't need to bother about the promotion of the city name. With 20 million citizens it is the largest host city of the Winter Olympics ever.

The honour being the largest Olympic host city shares it with Beijing itself. In 2008 it organised the Summer Olympics and therefore it will be the first city to organise the Olympic Summer and Winter Games. And after Oslo in 1952 it will be just the second capital in 100 years to organise the Winter Olympics.

Locations

Not all sports will be held within the coty borders of Beijing. The Organising committee has allocated three Competition Zones for the 15 sports. The ice sports and the big air will have their competitions in Beijing. It will also be the location and the opening and closing ceremony. About 75 km (50 mi) to the north-west of Beijing is the Yanqing Competion Zone. This will be the area for the sliding sports as well as the alpine disciplines. The Zhangjiakou Competion Zone will be another 50 km (30 mi) further and the location for cross country, biathlon, ski jumping, nordic combination, snowboarding and free style skiing.

Climate

In February the average temperature in Beijing is around +4°C (39°F) and the average minimum temperature is -7°C (19°F). On average in this month there is hardly any rainfall. For Zhangjiakou (snow disciplines except alpine skiing) the average maximum temperature is just above the freezing point and the average minimum temperature is -13°C (8°F). The average temperatures are winter like in Zhangjiakou, but just like in Beijing there is on average hardly any precipitation in February.

Time zone

Beijing and the Competion Zones are situated in the time zone UTC +8. The table below shows the time converted into a few local times.

After completion a high-speed train should connect the two cities within an hour. The original plan also included a high-speed rail line to the Zhangjiakou Competition Zone and the city of Yanqing, but as it seems now there will be a regular train on this route.
